About the Project

The past two years have decreased our options for conventional pleasure, and limited our ability to interact communally; virtual meetings have given us (somewhat limited) ways to communicate with each other, as the social beings that we are. We also need to maintain our links with the natural world and with other living things, even flowers and other plants. As Voltaire said, “The only worthwhile thing for people to do is to cultivate their gardens.” Art transmutes the artist’s response to their subject into a tangible object that someone else can react to; it is more than a simple record of their visual impressions. In particular, images of flowers and plants are more than just records of their appearance; they can convey a deeper sense of the experience of being with them, which may help the viewer respond to them more deeply, as well.
